What aspects of hunger interest you and your students the most? What questions will you be exploring?
- Why do some people not have enough to eat?
- How does hunger impact people’s lives?
- Where does our food come from?
- How do people around the world feed their families?
- What other forces and issues are connected with hunger and food security?
- How are people trying to solve this issue?
Introduction
Hello, everyone. My name is Nerisa Pampilo. I am working in one of the elementary schools here in North Carolina. I am originally from the Philippines. I become curious about exploring more resources about hunger problems and how to lessen if not alleviate hunger problems. I like to bring back my passion and concern for those people in need to my students at the school. I want to take the challenge of contributing something by starting with myself to take a stand and courage to make a difference.

I am glad that I had the liberty to pick this topic about hunger in my "Transform Our World: The Global Goals" course which was so timely because we also have another course on "Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger" so I decided to engage my students more deeply on what we can do to alleviate hunger. We started using CNN 10 to brainstorm about some world problems presented in the news and then the students watched a video about solving world problems using bird's eye view just to continue brainstorming about world problems and how the technology, "drones" can gather various unknown information and unveil the conditions of the problems. I provided a graphic organizer for them to fill-up after they identify the world problems presented in the video. We also focused on hunger problems and determine the root causes and solutions and analyze why food won't only solve hunger problems. The best part of our lessons was when students were able to make reflection after they accomplished their research. They were able to develop self-awareness, curiosity, and empathy with people's unique and diverse situations throughout the world. We also continued to use CNN 10 each day to know what is going on around the world and then talked about some issues and problems presented in the video. I also used several Ted Talk from youtube to expose our students with the sustainable development goals and tied them up with issues and problems around the world and what they can do to make the world a better place. The students made a pledge to help alleviate hunger problems and a reflection about "What can I do to alleviate world problems" which were very fantastic avenue for our students to examine themselves and think deeply about what they can do. It was a meaningful learning experience for me to watch them work on freerice.com to be able to donate grains to the hungry people. There was a significant transformation in their behavior when they care about others through the game. One student said that "I am going to donate a lot of rice today" as if he really handed them personally to the hungry people.

Reflection
We were able to cover hunger problems but the most interesting part was the students were able to reflect on what they can contribute to promoting solutions with other students. The students made interesting reflections about what they can do to make a difference in the community. Many of them have developed behavior transformation and a change of hearts towards the needs of other people and realized that we are connected with the world and that we can't alienate ourselves with others. They also agreed that there are too many that need to be done to achieve Zero Hunger goals throughout the world. It should start within ourselves to care for other people and take courage to stand for ourselves to make a difference with a new mindset and strong desire to help other people in need. Currently, our students are enjoying themselves to get on to freerice.com to donate grains to the hungry people just like handing the rice in person. They have a goal of reaching up to 2500 grains or more every time they work into vocabulary and math skills in a few minutes at the computer laboratory during their library time with me. Feedback From KM:
Hi Nerisa. Thanks so updating. I'm excited you took this course. It's always great to have the opportunity to work with you. As always, I'll take a look through your learning product and offer you some feedback!
I see that you have started a great collection with resources to help support the work within your classroom. I thought you may want mine as well. Feel free to add any resources you like to your collection as well. You can access it here: https://www.participate.com/collections/zero-hunger/2c9eb65d-a27f-404f-a4f6-58156bcc76fc
Oh, yes, thanks for sharing your collection. I love to add them to my collection too. It is great to work with you. I know that I will always have valuable takeaways from your feedback with me.
The global competencies for this course are intercultural knowledge and understanding as well as self-awareness and understanding of global issues. You were definitely able to foster these skills with your investigation hunger. Providing such varied experiences for your students was sure to result in meaning and engagement. I think what I appreciate the most with this work is that you help students understand the complexity of hunger. And I also love that you're leading your students to action in this area as well. It's such an amazing thing to watch when students take action for good--isn't it? I wonder if you'd be able to create a community project with this work? As a Media Coordinator, you're in the perfect spot!
High five, Nerisa for seeing how this work is connected to other course work. Don't you just love how teaching one global goal sort of just ripples in the impact it can have? Your school is definitely lucky to have you there! I have really enjoyed having an opportunity to learn and grow along side of you again. Congratulations on another badge well earned!
