Hi. Megan. I am Nerisa Pampilo, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for Ask About the World: Global Inquiry. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. Thanks.
Generally, we like to see at least three resources or more inside a collection. You can add resources to your collection by clicking on the red plus symbol inside the collection feature. You can search for resources to add by typing your topic in the top search bar. Thanks! Subsequently, you can also verify the privacy status or permissions to access your lesson plan, student work, and student reflection because I was unable to view them with your links. You may download your work as a PDF or word doc and add it to your collection if you are unable to do it due to your school or district restrictions. After you’ve done that, be sure to send me a message to let me know using the “Join the discussion” on your Learning Product page or click on "Respond to Feedback" in your email to be directed on the same page. Thanks! Finally, I was able to access your lesson plan, student work, and student reflection. Now, the only thing you can do is to update your collection because we need 3 or more resources inside your stack. Please go back to your dashboard and click on your collection in this module so that you can add resources to your collection by clicking on the red plus symbol inside the collection feature. You can search for resources to add by typing your topic in the top search bar. Thanks! Thank you for updating your collection and for providing enough resources that you can use to further the objectives of this module. I just want to let you know that there are tons of resources that you can explore in Participate that you can add and use it for your teaching and learning activities with your kids. Anyhow, I like that you have tackled this topic with your students so that they will know the status of education for girls or women around the world. This is also a perfect opportunity for you to relate this topic to gender equality. I bet your students especially the girls were moved with great gratitude and sympathy to Malala Yousafzai in Pakistan for her extraordinary work and heroism to fight for the rights of girls or women to go to school to get education notwithstanding the terrible consequences she has faced for her advocacy. This was an excellent choice for an article that you discussed with your students. I am impressed that you went beyond gathering the information about the number of women around the world who were not able to go to school by allowing your students to read the life of Malala Yousafzai which was very significant so that your students would be able to conduct an introspection of their lives and develop empathy and curiosity of what is going on around the world and make connection unto their lives so that they can also make the right choice on how to behave themselves in the society the world in general. It is also amazing that your students were able to discern the effects or impact of the women who can't go to school and what they can do if they have the means to do something for those women around the world. I like that you enjoyed having this approach and had a plan to employ this inquiry-based learning with your students so that they can continue to improve their critical thinking, creativity and perhaps you can also cultivate in them to develop empathy and global awareness in the succeeding school year. Congratulations on a job well done! I am pleased to award you with a badge for this module. Please continue to mold your students to enhance their global competencies. MM - 5/10/18 - Badge Awarded - NSPHello, Megan. I am Nerisa, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for You Belong Here: Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning in a Global Classroom. I am looking forward to working with you in this module.
Collection You have enough collection to support you in achieving the objectives of this module. I like that you utilized the green screen to let your students travel to many places through the inspiration of the book "Flat Stanley". This project is really a great avenue and inspiration for your students to be curious about things they never saw or visited before in there life. Absolutely, this opportunity will lead them to discover a lot of attributes and characteristics in themselves as they unravel that intercultural knowledge and understanding from the places they've traveled and been curious about animals, plants, and the people therein including the language they speak, the food they eat, clothes they wear and fun things they do that depict their culture and traditions. Student Work It was evident in your student work that the kids were excited to find new things or information from the places they traveled during your activity with Flat Stanley. I bet your students find it as a fascinating adventure for them to visit unfamiliar places yet interesting for them because they will be able to learn some facts that will build a global cultural mark for them to become curious about and hope to learn more or dig deeper as they continue to explore places around the world. Maybe, next year, you will be able to utilize a passport to stamp the important information of their travel to the places they went with Flat Stanley. I am glad that your students had learned significant facts about the places they traveled through the green screen. I like that you mentioned about the Grand Canyon that you're student had reflected on and Florida that was always perceived as having waters around or close to the beach. It was really a meaningful learning experience for your students to conceptualize some relevant ideas and thoughts about a certain place and in doing so you have allowed your students to think critically and be aware of other places around the world that they can differentiate from each other. I am glad that you were able to use this project as an amazing opportunity for your students to develop global awareness when they appreciate the places they traveled to the green screen and through the inspiration of Flat Stanley project that the students were excited and interested to engage themselves, enjoy, have some fun and hopefully, they would find some time to convey their experience with other students, family, and friends. Congratulations! I am pleased to award you a badge for your hard work in this module. Please continue to grow with your students to learn about other countries and make them real to your students using the green screen. Good job, Megan! You have sufficient collection to support you with your lesson in this module. When I examined your lesson plan, I was fascinated by the choice of your book "Wonder by R.J. Palacio to introduce your students to the intricacy of knowing and understanding of people's diverse culture. This is a perfect example of a story that is suitable in the discussion of culture centered around investigating the main character's unusual appearance to unfold opportunities to learn one's attributes, characters or outlook in life that will lead your students to accept themselves as a unique individual first before you be accepted by others too just like August in the story. It was evident in your student work the positive engagement of your class that revolves around the story, "Wonder by R.J. Palacio" and particularly with the main character of the story who is center of attention because of his deformities. I like how you manage to emphasize the relevant information or flow of the story as shown in your student work. I was wondering if you have seen the "Cultural Heritage Person" where you can also utilize to focus on the character traits of August and other characters in the story to investigate and compare and contrast him with your individual students in the class. Have you considered the Venn diagram for comparing and contrasting the characters of the story? Have you tackled about bullying, "to be brave, stand up for yourself, and not give in to bullying because it's never okay". Have you told your students that in many cases, it's not your circumstances that determine your happiness, but your outlook and attitude in life? Anyhow, I bet your students were able to conduct an introspection into their lives to be able to examine themselves how are they going to react when prompted with the same situation in the story about August atypical appearance. In your student reflection, I was explicitly revealed that your students had developed their empathy towards people which was a good indication of their willingness to accept people with personal and cultural differences. It gave me the delight to hear from you that you also learned a new outlook from the story that you also need to know the values of your colleagues who came from different countries to be able to accept them and work as a team to become a stronger school. Very nice, Tiffany! Congratulations! It gives me pleasure to award you a badge for your hard work in this module. Please continue to mold your students to develop their global competencies. Good job, Tiffany! |
Hi. Hazel. I am Nerisa Pampilo, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for Ask About the World: Global Inquiry. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. Thanks.
****Hello Nerisa! I too am excited to be working with you this year on the global inquiry module. I plan on implementing ideas and resources from this learning experience into my instructions to encourage students to explore other cultures. Thanks! I like your excitement as well as your plan for implementing ideas and resources from your learning experience in this module into your instructions to encourage your students to explore other cultures. I see that you have sufficient collection about poverty that can support you to meet the objective of this course. I appreciate you for tackling this subject about poverty using an inquiry-based learning with your student. I know that there is so much that you can do with your students so that they can understand the impact of poverty on the life of the people around the world. You can also continue and enhance this discussion if you want in the succeeding course about "Sustainable Development Goals: No Poverty" since you already touched on solutions to end poverty with your students as part of inquiries you also focused with your students in this lesson. Have you also talked about some root causes of poverty? Did you brainstorm about the relations of poverty with hunger around the world? These are some of the inseparable topics that you need to touch base with your students. I was also wondering if you would you decide to move on to the next course on "Sustainable Development Goals: No Poverty" which would be easy for you now because you have gathered relevant facts about poverty so think about exploring also the course. It was evident in your student work that you have allowed your students to investigate the global issue about poverty around the world which gave them opportunities to think critically and develop empathy towards poor people around the world. At some point, while doing their research, they should be able to conduct an introspection in their lives and realized what they can do if they only have little money in their hand to have the right choice between spending it with what they need versus what they want. It was also crucial when your students have reflected on what Pattillo had done to help alleviate poverty which somehow made them aware of what they can possibly do to people in need. However, I was also surprised that maybe it's a reality that people who are in poverty will still choose to have phones or cell phones or internet than having utilities and housing which kind off or big shift of their priority. In this case, you have to check with your students what is to be prioritized when you don't have enough money to spend. I suggest that you continue with the next course about "Sustainable Development Goals: No Poverty so that you can discuss poverty more deeply with your students. I am glad that you have led your students to understand the relevance of helping people by giving their time and resources. I like that you have a goal of preparing your students into productive citizens to be able to contribute in making the world a better place to live which is very significant and promising gesture to continue to work with your students to enhance their global competencies. Good job, Hazel, and congratulations! I have awarded you a badge for this module. Please continue to mold your students to develop them into becoming productive citizens of the country and the world in general. AB - 5/8/18 - Badge Awarded - NSPHello, Amy. Your collection was sufficient to support you to meet your objectives of this module. I was able to access your lesson plan about identifying and retelling folktales and I was hoping that you can provide a student work which is different from your student reflection. Have you utilized a Venn diagram to compare and contrast "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters" with other stories? Can you take a picture of your other worksheets? The links you provided for your student work and student reflection were showing the same thing that I can take for student reflection but you still need to provide for your student work. Please visit your learning product and "Join the Discussion" to send your student work or you can email it to me. Thanks. Hi, Amy. I was able to scroll down your student work and student reflection page at the bottom. However, could you explain further the relation of those pictures to the folktales that you discussed with your students? I have identified in your collection the African tale, "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters" but what was another folktales that they need to compare and contrast with because I missed the connection of them. Please tell us about the other stories that your students are trying to choose from the folktales in your lesson plan. Hi, Amy. I got your message. Please visit your learning product and "join the discussion" to send us your other worksheets using the Venn diagram so that I can correlate your student work to the objective of the course. You have to develop critical thinking, curiosity, and understanding of global issues and also to promote empathy towards people and understand cultural diversity. You need to tell us how did you touch base those global competencies. Please let me know if you have questions and I will be here to support you! This is the link to your learning product below. Please visit this link and then click "Join the Discussion" so that you can share with us your final reflection. In your reflection, you can tell us how your students were impacted by this teaching? I would love to see you reflect on this lesson or activity. What worked well? What would you change next time? In what ways did this lesson impact your students. Thanks, and please let me know if you have questions and I will be here to support you. https://www.participate.com/learning-products/learning-product-for-you-belong-here-culturally-responsive-teaching-and-learning-in-a-global-classroom/770901fb-c3b4-410c-bcdc-0f54f2990654#_ You have covered a sensible amount of stories that your students can investigate and dig deeper to be able to compare and contrast the personal characteristics or attributes of the characters, as well as the settings and events that should unfold variety of cultural aspects of the stories. The students should be able to conduct and introspection of their lives on how to behave themselves when faced with similar situations to be able to make the right choice. Your meaningful discussions can foster your students to develop self-awareness and empathy towards people when you focused on the lesson or morals they got from the story which was also significant to uncover their own cultural beliefs and perspectives on things they had never seen or encountered before in life that might have happened to some people around the world. It was notable that you were able to collaborate with your colleagues to plan for a lesson that involved global competencies. I like that this opportunity has challenged yourself to go further outside the box so that you can continually improve your practice and also develop your students' global competencies as they become mindful of the global aspects of your lesson which is very relevant in a culturally responsive global classroom. I suggest that you continue to engage your students to develop global intercultural awareness and empathy to people's conditions or situations with the diverse culture around the world. Good job, Amy! I have awarded you a badge for this module. Please continue to mold your students to develop their global competencies. Sample: ****Good job, Amy!
