I am Nerisa Pampilo, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for You Belong Here: Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning in a Global Classroom. I am looking forward to working with you in this module.
You have provided a sufficient collection that can help you to attain your goals and objectives of your lesson to have a culturally responsive global classroom. Your lesson or activity became more interesting with your students when you conduct the Skype interview with a partner classroom in Connecticut. You were able to let them explore and investigate other students' perspectives on helping people in the community. It was an amazing learning experience for your students to gather different thoughts and ideas from another classroom which will also allow them to develop their critical thinking, curiosity, and awareness about other people around the world. It was evident in your student work and student reflection that you had led your students quite well in meeting your objectives. It was notable that you go beyond your classroom by allowing them to do Skype interview to students from other State and had a meaningful takeaway of the activity that students were able to share with their family as reflected in their writing piece. Good job, Stephanie. I am glad that this activity has created a significant avenue that encourages you to do more to be able to learn about your students' cultural heritage as they uncover their personal thoughts and ideas about lending a helping hand in the community. There is so much that you can do to unravel your student's curiosity and empathy towards other people around the world. I like that you take this as a valuable opportunity to develop your students' abilities to become better global citizens that can easily adapt to our ever-changing world. Congratulations! I am pleased to award you a badge for your work in this module. Thanks for all you do and please continue to mold the minds of your students to enhance their global competencies. AC- 5/2/18 - Badge Awarded - NSPHi. Amanda. I am Nerisa Pampilo, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for Ask About the World: Global Inquiry. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. Thanks.
You have provided enough collection to support you in conducting this lesson to your students. I find it interesting for your kids to learn about the value of money in order to survive in South America. I want to see if the kids were able to conduct an introspection of their lives so that they can also relate themselves to an actual investigation while they are doing the simulation process. Were they able to differentiate their need and want? Do you have some examples of food that are necessary for them to survive? What about showing to them some of the staple food in South America and compare them with our food in the United States? This is really exciting and fun for the kids to travel to South America and find out if they can survive with the money they have on hand. You can do a lot of things to let your kids explore various possibilities and let them decide the best that they can do with less money on hand compared to those who have more money. Way to go, Amanda! I like that you were able to emphasize the value of money in order to survive in your simulation process with your first-grade students as evidence in your student work. I can tell that they are really engaged in figuring out what to buy with their money on hand. Have you tried to connect your lesson with hunger and poverty around the world because that would be a good succeeding lesson if you like to explore on topics related to sustainable development goals? Anyhow, I am certain you had a fantastic time having this inquiry-based learning with your students to connect them with other countries and the world in general. I am glad that your students were able to reflect on a situation about people living in poverty with a limited money in their pocket to buy what they need to survive. It's amazing that they also realized the importance of having a plan to prioritize what to buy with their money in order to survive. Just make sure that you will find some time to lead your students or make them more aware of people's economic situation around the world to develop empathy and respect for those people who don't have enough opportunities to survive or even to get help or receive support from other people. I like that you allow your students to take charge of their own learning when you tackle the global concept about poverty with them so that they will know what to do when they only have less money to survive compared with those that have more money to get what they need and want. Despite some assumption that might be hindering you to use inquiry-based learning, I was impressed that you still continue to use the inquiry-driven lesson to inspire your students to learn more about the world so that they can enhance their global competencies. Good job, Amanda! Congratulations! I am delighted to award you a badge for your work in this module. Thanks for all you do and please continue to mold the minds of your students to enhance their global competencies. CR- 4/25/18 - Badge Awarded - NSP
Hello, Colleen. Generally, we like to see at least three resources or more inside a collection that you can use to collaborate with your peers or which can also support you in becoming a globally responsive classroom. You can add resources to your collection by clicking on the red plus symbol inside the collection feature. You can search for resources in the Participate collection to add by typing your topic in the top search bar. Thanks! Lesson Plan You have created meaningful opportunities for your students to gather information about their cultural heritage by completing a cultural heritage survey with the support of their family members, creating their individual heritage person to share with their classmates and making a class heritage graph. I was wondering if all teachers in your school have been using the same strategies throughout the school for this course. I have seen this work with the other teachers. That's fine for as long as your focusing on knowing and learning your own students' cultural background. Student Work It was evident in the work of your students that you gave them activities to discover their cultural differences among themselves to be able to know and understand their peers better. It is true that they have to unravel their own identities first before others. Knowing themselves first is crucial in developing global competencies to enhance their cultural and global mindedness and connection, empathy and respect for the people' unique attributes and family background around the world. Student Reflection It was noteworthy to see how your students have recognized the importance of knowing others as knowing about the world. I was also impressed by how your students have uncovered their commonality and uniqueness among themselves as expressed by one's culture and tradition that has brought them to enhance their knowledge and understanding about the world around them. Final Reflection I like that this lesson meant a great deal to you because that will be a good sign that you will continue to nurture this learning experience with your students to explore and investigate more about their identities, family history, and background. You may continue to look for ways to allow your students to enhance self-awareness, develop empathy and respect for people's cultural diversity so that they will be able to know and understand the world better. Good job, Colleen! Congratulations! I have awarded you a badge for your work in this module. Thanks for all you do and please continue to mold the minds of your students to enhance their global competencies. ****Yes, another teacher and I worked together to create and teach this lesson with each of our classes. I have just been a bit lax about getting it submitted. ***** No problem, Colleen! |

Currently, I was unable to access your lesson plan, student work, and student reflection. Please check your permission or privacy status on your google docs. Thanks. Yes, finally, I was able to access your lesson plan, however, I was still unable to view your student work and student reflection. Can you go back to your google drive and check again the privacy status of your student work and student reflection or maybe you can share them with me? Thanks. I received your student work and student reflection but I was unable to read through all of your students' responses because the print is fading. Can you give us a brief reflection of your students about what they learned about Fiji? Thanks. I got it, Faith. It looks like you have an exciting topic about Fiji. Have you tried exploring and investigating the Fijians? Maybe, you can also talk about some of the Fijian's food, clothing, beliefs, and traditions. Anyhow, when you tackled the flag and other important Fijian's symbols, you can explore a lot of possibilities to uncover the Fijian's culture and traditions. You can always do more to strengthen this topic with your students as you make them more curious about Fiji, it will be easy for you to explore more and they are interested to learn any other information about Fiji. You may take one step at a time or slowly with your kids and you will still get there. I appreciate you for taking your time to use an inquiry-driven learning with your kids to learn about other countries even though you said you had no resources to teach comfortably or confidently about other countries. I can tell that you made valuable steps to take your kids to learn globally because you showcase their work during the global parade which is a significant contribution to your hard work to make your students be more aware of other countries around the world especially when you let them compare and contrast Fiji with Clinton, NC. Way to go, Faith! Congratulations! I would like to award you a badge for your work in this module. Thanks for all you do and please continue to mold the minds of your students to enhance their global competencies. DL- 5//18 - Badge Awarded - NSPHello, David. I have noted that you were able to administer the cultural heritage questions to your students and cultural reflection as well. Have you talk or follow-up the other responses of your students when they come to the library? Have some students share their cultural heritage and you will be amazed and be motivated to continue to know your students better. You can also do this activity in a pair or in small groups. This is one way where you would be able to know your student's personal identities and family background and including their diverse culture and traditions. In this way, you will be able to provide an opportunity for your students to conduct and introspection of their lives and have better awareness and understanding and empathy of people around the world as unique individuals with maybe similar or different experiences from them. I suggest that you continue to explore various resources at Participate collection so that you will be able to find some activities that you can adopt or you can contact me at [email protected] if you need my assistance and I will be happy to support you. I like that you mentioned in your final reflection that it is important to highlight what brings us together than what sets us apart so that means you still have the role to bridge the gap if there is something that remains a misunderstanding among our students. We have to emphasize to them that people around the world are unique individuals. It doesn't matter what is the color of our skin or what is the race we have but the most important thing to understand is that we are in one way or another connected to each other to develop intercultural awareness and empathy towards people with a unique background, situations, and circumstances. Again, I suggest that you continue to create an opportunity for your students to develop their global competencies. Congratulations! I would like to award you a badge for this module. Please continue to visit Participate collection to explore more resources that you can use to mold your students to develop their global competencies and become better citizens of the country and the world in general. Hello, Sara.
****Nice to meet you. Tomorrow is the big day for the Cultural Resume project. I will be displaying them at our school's International Cultural Night at a table that represents the USA and the cultural connection that our K families have to their heritage and what that looks like in the US. I am planning on interviewing a family after the presentations and asking what they have learned and found valuable from this cultural experience. I did not just limit the project to my K class but extended it to the entire Kindergarten student body. I will update my project on Friday with additional videos and photos from the big night. It is going to be such a special night for our families! Thank you to Participate for giving me the tools and confidence to embark on this journey. I am looking forward to growing and becoming more global as the years go on. Sincerely, Sara Studebaker Wow, Sara, I really love your passion for imparting this exciting journey with your kids to learn about each other and other kindergarten children around the world, particularly in Chile. I can't wait to see your student work and student reflection. Currently, I was unable to access both of them so please change your privacy or sharing permission to "Anyone who has the link can view" so I can proceed with your feedback. Subsequently, I also found out that I was unable to access your collection. I thought I had a problem with my login because it kept on telling me to log in to my Participate account. But, there seems to have a problem with the link you provided because I can't find your collection also on your profile. Please check it for me and let me know if there anything I can help you. Collection You have provided sufficient collection that can support you with your lesson. It was amazing that you used the book, "Same, same, but different" to inspire your kids to know and learn about other children around the world. I can't wait to explore your lesson to find out how you conduct this lesson about finding out the life of the Chilean children when they are going to exchange letters with their pen pals from the former students of your co-teacher. Lesson Plan I find your lesson very engaging and exciting for the kids. The book, "Same, same but different" is a perfect tool to utilize before you let your kids exchange letters with the children in Chile. With the use of the book alone, you can already uncover similarities and differences among your students when they explore their own attributes and be more aware of their life as a kid compared to the characters in the story. As they continue to unravel their own cultural background, you will find a lot of interesting facts about your kids and those kids in Chile. It allows them to develop intercultural awareness, empathy, and respect for people's uniqueness and cultural diversity. This is a great opportunity for them to discover more about themselves, their identities especially their family background as you also continue to nurture them in your succeeding activities to showcase their works and cultural heritage. I commend you for having this exciting adventure for your children. Good job, Sara! Student Work I can see in the photographs that you have done a wonderful job in keeping your kids excited to do their work. I like the part that you get the parents involved in the preparation of their cultural resume. It would also be nice if you can invite any member of the family of your kid who has a different cultural background to share a little bit about their cultural heritage. I was just wondering if that would be possible because I find it too interesting when I saw the cultural resume you posted in your student work. I am glad that you plan to work collaboratively or share this journey with the other Kindergarten classes. It would be a wonderful learning experience for all kindergarten kids. Student Reflection You have a quick reflection piece with your student but it substantiates the excellent work that you have done with your kids. What matters most is your positive attitude to work with your kids and create a solid foundation for them to develop their global competencies. Final Reflection I agree with you that you had a powerful lesson with your kindergarten. Good job, Sara, for choosing the right book, "Same, same but different" in conjunction with your next activity of writing letters. I appreciate your courage in bringing this activity into your classroom and to all kindergarten. It is not a one-time activity because you are creating an ongoing journey with your kids when they start exchanging letters from the Chilean Spanish children. This is also a good ongoing strategy to support your Spanish kid and the rest of your students in the class to understand and respect each other's cultural background. I am also certain that they will love it. Just make sure that you will also involve your parents in this exciting adventure. Let them know that you had meaningful learning objectives of this project and clear directions for your children to follow and an inspiration from Participate courses that you derived to conduct this project. Good job, Sara for a job well done! Congratulations! I have awarded you a badge for your great work in this module. Thanks for all you do and please continue to mold the minds of your students to enhance their global competencies. |

Generally, we like to see at least three resources or more inside a collection. You can add resources to your collection by clicking on the red plus symbol inside the collection feature. You can search for resources to add by typing your topic in the top search bar. Thanks, and please let me know if you need anything to get you started with building your collection. Your responses are still missing on the following questions: Lesson Title: Depth of Knowledge (check any that apply) Level One: Recall Level Two: Skill/ Concept xLevel Three: Strategic Thinking xLevel Four: Extended Thinking How does your question support student inquiry? Is your compelling question: Open-Ended? Relevant to students’ interests? Authentic and connected to the real world? Aligned to competencies and learning goals? Concept-focused, rather than topic-based? Big enough to spark further inquiry? How do your selected resources support intercultural knowledge and self-awareness? Thank you! Subsequently, please provide a brief reflection of your students or you can talk about how did you conduct the lesson to your students and what reflection can you draw from your student work or does your lesson have an impact or any connection on the lives of your students. You can also mention any stumbling block or impediment, strength or weaknesses when you teach the lesson to your students and what can you do to make it better. Thanks. ***I just added that at the bottom. I'm not exactly sure where you wanted it to go. Please write it down in the "join the discussion" or click "Respond to Feedback" in your email. Thanks! Student Work/Student Reflection You have an interesting lesson about Asian art particularly on koinobori, meaning "carp streamer" in Japanese, are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Children's Day. I like that you've selected this topic to explore and investigate artworks to uncover Japanese culture through arts. I hope that you have emphasized to them the meaning of having the fish in their artworks to symbolize energy and power so that the students will conduct an introspection into their lives and examine how Japanese beliefs and traditions can somehow influence their behavior in the society where they live and the world in general. It was evident in your "student work" that you've led them quite well in creating their own koinobori. It fosters curiosity and intercultural awareness to your students when they compare the arts with other Asian countries. They will also learn to appreciate artworks depicting the diverse culture in Asia especially with the Japanese people. Final Reflection I like that you kept your students engaged in this lesson since they enjoyed, had fun and been enthusiastic to incorporate them into their own lives. Apparently, you were able to overcome the limitation of your materials and got a desired result at the end. You may continue to find ways to promote an inquiry-based approach to your students and inculcate in them the relevance of global intercultural awareness, appreciation, and respect for people's beliefs and customs. Good job, Jessica! Congratulations! I am glad to award you a badge for your work in this module. Please continue to work with your students to enhance their global competencies. |

Collection You have created a sufficient collection of resources to support you as you teach inquiry-based learning lessons with your students about Origami. It was also notable that you included a valuable resource about the health benefits arising from the art of origami which will strengthen your goal and objectives of your lesson. Lesson I find it interesting to sit in your class while you tackle this project with your students. It may be simple for others but challenging for those with IEPs in a self-contained class since you won't just be focusing on their motor development skills but also as far as mental and psychological and even social aspect of the children. I love that you had this lesson to develop your students not only physical development but holistically because the big weight will be on how they can express and handle their feelings in a stressful situation. Creating origami is just like bringing or introducing other culture to your students in your classroom. Traditionally, origami or the art of paper folding was not just an invention for the Japanese but it also denotes a gift or token of good fortune. I hope that you were able to allow your students to conduct an introspection into their lives so that they can relate the Japanese culture and traditions on how they are going to behave themselves in the society and the world in general. Student Work I like the support you gave to your students to accomplish their written responses in the graphic organizer. That would also be a good student reflection for them that we can examine how your students feel about the project aside from the audio recording. Although, I was hoping to see some finished work of origami from your students. It would have been better if you were able to photograph the actual activities while they were creating their own origami. Apparently, you were able to make them more aware of what they can do, be curious and creative and develop global knowledge and understanding of cultural diversity when you impart the lesson to your students. Final Reflection I am glad that you purposely had this fun and engaging activities to learn from other countries in order to help your students to create new strategies during stressful situations. This has been neglected most of the time in the classroom on how to de-stress our students once in while. I love that the origami project had given your students opportunity to collaborate or communicate each other and think about how they can help other students in the class. I agree with you to have a diary or a journal with them so that you can continue to keep track of the impact of the stress strategies you been implementing in class. Good job, Virginia! Congratulations! I am glad to award you a badge for your work in this module. Please continue to work with your students to enhance their global competencies. |
